Alaska Snow Winter Weather Advisory

FAIRBANKS, Alaska — The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a winter weather advisory for parts of interior Alaska, predicting up to 9 inches of snowfall from Thursday afternoon through Friday evening.

The advisory includes the White Mountains, high terrain south of Fairbanks, and the Chatanika River Valley. The NWS warns that motorists and residents should be prepared for slippery roads and reduced visibility during this early season storm.

“Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes,” the NWS stated in its advisory issued at 4:44 a.m. Wednesday.

The advisory is effective from 2 p.m. Thursday until 10 p.m. Friday. NWS forecasts snow accumulations of 4 to 9 inches, especially in higher elevations. Areas expected to be most affected include the Steese Highway up to mile marker 90 and portions of the White Mountains.

The snowfall could start with a weaker system Wednesday night before intensifying as the main storm approaches Thursday night through Friday morning. Residents are advised to stay cautious on outdoor surfaces, which may quickly become icy.

This advisory follows a weekend where Fairbanks received over an inch of snow, marking an early start to the winter season. “According to record, the Fairbanks area typically gets their first inch of snow on October 9th, so we are about two weeks ahead of schedule,” NWS Fairbanks shared on social media.

“If you are going outside, watch your first few steps taken on stairs, sidewalks, and driveways as these surfaces could be icy,” the advisory warned. In addition to driving safely, the NWS encourages individuals to follow updates from their official website and local communication channels regarding changing weather conditions.

As the storm progresses, further updates will be issued by the NWS to keep the public informed.
