Xbox Cloud Gaming, also known as xCloud, is on the cusp of potential improvements, but users are skeptical about the timing and extent of these enhancements. A recent discussion on Reddit highlighted the long-awaited improvements in bitrates, which could significantly enhance the streaming quality of games. However, users are cautious, recalling the prolonged wait for the ability to play owned games on the platform, a feature that was consistently labeled as “coming soon”.

The current streaming quality of xCloud is still based on the H.264 codec, which operates at 1080p/60fps. Users and experts suggest that switching to a more efficient codec like HEVC or AV1 could make a substantial difference, especially at lower bitrates. This change is crucial for achieving higher resolutions such as 4K/60 HDR, which is currently not supported by xCloud or Xbox Remote Play.

Despite the potential for technical improvements, the service remains in its beta stage, with some users questioning whether it will ever leave this phase. The ongoing development and the recent acquisition of Activision Blizzard by Microsoft have reportedly put xCloud in a state of “stasis,” delaying planned improvements.

Additional issues include the lack of support for controller vibration on certain devices. Users have reported that while controller rumble is supported on Windows PCs, it does not work on devices like the Amazon Firestick. This inconsistency highlights the need for broader compatibility and feature parity across different platforms.

The community’s skepticism is further fueled by the fact that even with upcoming features, such as the ability to play owned games, users will still need a Game Pass Ultimate subscription to access these games via xCloud. This requirement adds to the frustration and uncertainty about the future quality and usability of the service.
