Dr. Peter J. Mohler Named 30th President of University of Alabama

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees appointed Peter J. Mohler, PhD, as the 30th president of The University of Alabama today. He will begin his term on July 21.
Mohler has over 20 years of experience in higher education and is currently serving as executive vice president for research, innovation, and knowledge at Ohio State University. He previously stepped in as acting president there in 2023, demonstrating his leadership capabilities.
UA System Chancellor Sid J. Trant, who recommended Mohler’s appointment, praised him for being uniquely equipped to enhance the university’s foundation. “He is a champion for public higher education, able to transform lives and communities through teaching, research, and service,” Trant said.
Mohler joined Ohio State in 2011 as the director of the Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute. He has since held various leadership roles, increasing the university’s research momentum significantly.
Expressing gratitude for his new role, Mohler stated, “It is a tremendous honor to be named the next president of The University of Alabama. I look forward to working together to expand our impact and build on the University’s remarkable momentum.”
Throughout his career, Mohler has gained recognition for his research, with over 275 peer-reviewed publications. His focus has been on studying heart rhythms and failure, leading to several advancements in medical care.
He is set to replace Stuart R. Bell, who is retiring after a decade as president. “Dr. Mohler is a highly respected leader who will elevate The University of Alabama to new heights,” said UA System Board of Trustees President Pro Tempore Scott Phelps.
Mohler earned his bachelor’s degree in biology from Wake Forest University and completed his doctorate in cell and molecular physiology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
