USMNT Faces Guatemala in Gold Cup Semifinals After Tense Quarterfinal Win

ST. LOUIS, Missouri — The United States Men's National Team (USMNT) is set to take on Guatemala in the semifinals of the 2025 Concacaf Gold Cup on Wednesday, July 2, at 7 p.m. ET. The match will take place at Energizer Park, following the U.S.’s dramatic victory over Costa Rica in a penalty shootout.
The USMNT secured its place in the semifinals after finishing the group stage with a perfect record of three wins. In the quarterfinals, they battled Costa Rica to a 1-1 draw, leading to penalties where goalkeeper Matt Freese saved three out of six attempts, clinching the win for the Americans.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino’s side, despite missing key players like Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie, has displayed solid performance throughout the tournament. The dynamics of players like Malik Tillman and Patrick Agyemang have been pivotal, with Tillman standing out as a strong playmaker.
On the other hand, Guatemala has surprised many by reaching the semifinals, after previously defeating Canada in another penalty shootout in the quarterfinals. Their victory was made possible by a dramatic equalizer from Rubio Rubin, who switched his national allegiance to Guatemala.
