PlayStation Games Meet Magic: The Gathering in New Collaboration
ATLANTA, Georgia — Sony Interactive Entertainment has announced an exciting partnership with Hasbro’s Wizards of the Coast to launch a new series of collectible trading cards that combine favorite PlayStation franchises with the popular game Magic: The Gathering. The collaboration, named the Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair x PlayStation Superdrop, will debut on October 27.
This unique series includes seven distinct Secret Lair drops, each featuring original artwork and gameplay mechanics inspired by iconic PlayStation games such as The Last of Us, God of War, and Horizon Forbidden West. Collaborating studios like Naughty Dog, Santa Monica Studio, and Guerrilla Games took part in the creative process to ensure that the essence of each game is reflected in the cards.
The first drop, Secret Lair x The Last of Us Part I, introduces Joel and Ellie as playable cards. They capture the relationship and strategies familiar to fans of the award-winning game. The second drop from The Last of Us Part II brings Abby and Ellie into play, illustrating their intertwining paths.
The adventure continues with the Secret Lair x Uncharted drop, featuring Nathan Drake, whose escapades are translated into Magic: The Gathering mechanics. “Every attack is another expedition, every fight another narrow escape,” said Neil Druckmann, Studio Head at Naughty Dog.
A pack focusing on God of War will have two segments: one exploring Kratos’s chaotic roots and the other portraying his journey with son Atreus. Santa Monica Studio’s Cory Barlog highlighted the unique approaches taken in each pack, emphasizing how the storyline shaped gameplay.
In addition, the Secret Lair x Horizon Forbidden West pack centers around protagonist Aloy, designed to reflect her resilience as she battles overwhelming odds. Guerrilla’s Ilya Golitsyn remarked on the representation of Aloy’s journey as a Seeker and her connection to the theme of Artifacts.
The final pack features Jin Sakai from Ghost of Tsushima, showcasing his dual identity as a samurai and stealthy ghost. “It was important for us to have Jin’s iconic silhouette represented,” said Jason Connell, Creative Director at Sucker Punch Productions.
The Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair x PlayStation Superdrop will be available on October 27 at 9 a.m. PT and will come in both foil and non-foil versions. This collaboration not only honors PlayStation’s rich storytelling but also reaches out to the Magic: The Gathering community, inviting them to engage with beloved characters in a new format.
