Injuries Impact NHL Season Opener Lineups

KINGSTON, R.I. — The NHL is gearing up for its season openers, but several teams are grappling with injury concerns. J.T. Miller and Artemi Panarin are both confirmed to play for the New York Rangers against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. Head coach Mike Sullivan reported that both players participated fully in practice Monday.
Miller, the Rangers’ new captain, sustained a lower-body injury during practice on September 29. Meanwhile, Panarin had been battling an upper-body injury but is cleared to rejoin the lineup.
On another front, the Colorado Avalanche will be missing goalie Mackenzie Blackwood, who is ruled out for their opener against the Los Angeles Kings due to an offseason injury and is listed as week to week.
The Buffalo Sabres are dealing with uncertainty surrounding defenseman Owen Power, who did not practice Monday and is questionable for Thursday’s game against the Rangers. Power sustained an injury during practice and coach Lindy Ruff has expressed cautious optimism regarding his availability.
Meanwhile, the St. Louis Blues have also announced that a forward will miss their season opener due to a lower-body injury suffered during practice.
In Washington, defensemen are still under evaluation after sustaining injuries in a preseason matchup. Coach Spencer Carbery said they will have a clearer picture of their status ahead of the Capitals’ opener against the Boston Bruins.
Despite the injuries, teams are looking forward to the regular season, and players like Miller and Panarin are essential for the Rangers’ success. As Miller described it, “It’s great to see everyone back and ready to compete.”
The NHL season officially begins this week, promising a mix of excitement and challenges as teams finalize their rosters while navigating the complexities of player health.
