Police Search for Released Sex Offender Seen Boarding Train to London
CHELMSFORD, England — Police are searching for Hadush Gerberslasie Kebatu, a convicted sex offender, who was mistakenly released from prison and last seen boarding a London-bound train Friday afternoon.
Kebatu, 41, was serving a 12-month sentence for sexually assaulting a woman and a 14-year-old girl. He was due to be sent to an immigration detention center for deportation but was let go in error. Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy confirmed Kebatu is currently at large in London.
The Metropolitan Police said Kebatu was spotted at Chelmsford railway station around 12:41 PM. Essex Police initiated a search operation shortly after learning of the release mistake at 12:57 PM. They assured the public that officers are working diligently to locate him.
Kebatu’s release has prompted outrage, with public figures expressing their anger. Labour leader Keir Starmer labeled the situation “appalling,” asserting Kebatu must be apprehended and deported swiftly.
Following his conviction in July, Kebatu was subjected to a five-year sexual harm prevention order and registered as a sex offender for ten years. He committed his crimes shortly after arriving in the UK via a small boat, living temporarily at the Bell Hotel in Epping.
Sources within the Prison Service indicated that Kebatu’s release was a result of human error, with an investigation underway. Reports claim the prison staff member responsible for approving his release has been removed from their duties.
Kebatu’s previous offenses have generated significant public concern, with protests occurring outside the Bell Hotel during his trial. The public’s frustration has been echoed by political leaders across parties, calling for reforms to prevent similar incidents.
As the manhunt continues, Kebatu is believed to have £76 on his person, intended for his initial expenses after release. Police are collaborating with multiple agencies, including the Metropolitan and British Transport Police, to expedite his capture and ensure public safety.
The urgency to locate Kebatu is paramount, as he has been deemed a “significant risk of reoffending” following his conviction.
