Trump Considers 2028 Run but Rules Out Vice Presidency
Jrat, White House — U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed interest in running for a third term in 2028, stating during his trip to Asia, “I would love to do it.” However, he has dismissed the idea of running for vice president, as suggested by some supporters.
Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump labeled the vice presidency as “too cute” and insisted, “It wouldn’t be right.” There is ongoing discussion about whether he could challenge the constitution’s 22nd Amendment, which restricts presidents to two terms, but experts say such attempts would likely fail.
Former Trump adviser Steve Bannon has hinted at a plan to secure Trump’s return in 2028. Bannon told The Economist, “Trump is going to be president in ’28, and people ought to just get accommodated with that. At the appropriate time, we’ll lay out what the plan is.” Trump’s statement about his current popularity, saying he has the “best poll numbers that I’ve ever had,” adds another layer to speculations about his future.
Trump also mentioned potential successors during his comments, highlighting vice president JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio as leaders he described as “unstoppable.” Nevertheless, he underscored that the Democratic Party does not have the same caliber of contenders, saying, “We have a great group of people, which they don’t.”
Repealing the 22nd Amendment would require a two-thirds majority in both the House of Representatives and Senate or a constitutional convention, an unlikely scenario given the current political landscape. Political analysts, including law professor Unger, suggest that any legal challenges to this amendment would not succeed.
Democrats have yet to finalize their candidates for 2028. California Governor Gavin Newsom revealed to CBS that he is considering a run, stating, “I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t thinking about it.” Meanwhile, Trump’s allies continue to promote his candidacy, claiming they believe in the potential for a loophole that could allow him to run again.
As speculation intensifies regarding Trump’s political future, his declarations continue to stir debate within both parties, leaving many questions on the table for upcoming elections.
