Ann Arbor Public Schools Address Rising Health Care Costs and Celebrate Academic Achievements
Ann Arbor Public Schools (AAPS) have been at the forefront of several significant developments in recent days. One of the key issues currently facing the district is the rising cost of health care for its teachers. On December 11, 2024, teachers rallied at a school board meeting to express their concerns and advocate for more affordable health care options. This rally highlights the ongoing struggle many school districts face in balancing budget constraints with the need to provide adequate benefits for their staff.
In more positive news, AAPS has reason to celebrate the academic achievements of its students. Recently, 51 students from the district were named Semi-Finalists in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program. This recognition underscores the district’s commitment to academic excellence and preparing students for higher education.
Additionally, the district’s music program has received notable accolades. Music teachers Misty Noble, Katie Ryan, and Jeffrey Willets from AAPS were awarded the University of Michigan Department of Music Education’s prestigious Phyllis Kaplan Leadership Award for Excellence in Mentoring General Music Teachers. This award reflects the high quality of music education provided within the district.
The AAPS Choirs are also set to be well-represented at the Michigan School Vocal Music Association Region C High School Honors Choir in December, further showcasing the district’s strong music programs.
In terms of community support, AAPS is organizing a winter giving initiative to help families and students in need. The program includes donating gift cards, organizing drives, and providing resources such as food and winter clothing.
