Apple Releases iOS 17.4 with New Features and Security Fixes
Apple Inc. has officially rolled out iOS 17.4, introducing a host of new features and security enhancements to its iPhone devices. The update, which includes new emoji characters, podcast transcriptions, and Apple Cash card numbers, is a significant release that aims to enhance user experience.
The latest OS update from Apple also brings significant changes for European Union users. With the enforcement of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) today, Apple is now obliged to allow side-loading of alternative marketplaces on iOS devices in Europe. This move is in response to regulatory pressures aimed at promoting competition in the digital market space.
One of the key additions in iOS 17.4 is the ability for EU users to access alternative app marketplaces in addition to the traditional App Store. Safari, the default web browser on iPhones, now supports third-party web browsers in the EU, giving users the option to choose their preferred default browser.
Apple Cash, the virtual wallet on iOS devices, has received an update with iOS 17.4. Users can now find card numbers, expiration dates, and security codes for their Apple Cash cards, making it easier to complete transactions with merchants who do not accept Apple Pay.
Furthermore, Apple Podcasts on iOS now offer full episode transcripts in multiple languages, including English, French, German, and Spanish. This feature allows users to navigate through podcasts more easily and search for specific words or phrases within episodes.
Sarah Herrlinger, Apple’s senior director of global accessibility policy and initiatives, emphasized the importance of the podcast transcripts feature in enhancing accessibility for all users. The transcripts can be used with various accessibility features, such as text size adjustments and voice-over capabilities.
Additionally, iOS 17.4 introduces 118 new emojis, including unique additions like a mushroom, phoenix, lime, and shaking head emojis. Users now have a wider range of expressive options to choose from, with the ability to customize the direction of certain people and body emojis.
