Astros Face Roster Decisions Amid Offseason Changes
HOUSTON, Texas — The Houston Astros are facing a crucial offseason as they reassess their roster following significant trades made at the last deadline. The team has added players like Carlos Correa, Jesus Sanchez, and Ramon Urias, creating a logjam in both the outfield and infield positions.
With Yordan Alvarez and Isaac Paredes returning from injuries and prospects like Brice Matthews and Jacob Melton ready to compete, the Astros are evaluating their options. It’s expected that Houston might trade several players to clear space on the roster.
Ramon Urias, who struggled with a .223 batting average and an OPS+ of 76 across 35 games, is a primary candidate for non-tendering. Despite his shortcomings, Urias has shown potential in the past, raising questions about his market value if put on the trade block.
“Houston could non-tender Urias, but he also would have trade value to other clubs,” an analyst noted, pointing to his previous successful season where he posted an OPS+ of 114.
If Urias leaves, Mauricio Dubon might become the everyday utility player with Paredes shifting to second base. Carlos Correa would remain at third, while Jeremy Pena is set to play shortstop. Additionally, Jose Altuve is expected to take on a larger role in the outfield and as designated hitter.
This configuration could pave the way for Matthews to either join the big league roster or be first in line for call-ups, which would support his continued development. As the offseason unfolds, Urias’s situation could significantly impact the Astros’ strategic planning for the upcoming season.
