Atlanta Dream Rebuilds to Historic Success Under New Leadership
ATLANTA, Georgia – The Atlanta Dream has transformed into a competitive force in the WNBA under first-year coach Karl Smesko and general manager Dan Padover. After trailing by 17 points against the Seattle Storm early in the third quarter, the Dream fought back to secure a seven-point victory, showcasing their newfound resilience. Rhyne Howard led the charge with 33 points, while Allisha Gray contributed 28.
Padover, hired in October 2021, was tasked with reshaping the franchise after it had only three players signed heading into the offseason. He emphasized a gradual rebuild without skipping critical steps. This strategy included executing 10 trades, resulting in notable acquisitions like Howard, Gray, and Jordin Canada, which helped the Dream generate the most wins in franchise history.
“That was the first time I really started to think, ‘OK, we might have something here,’” Padover said about the victory over Seattle. The Dream finished the season with 30 wins, the highest ever, earning a top-four playoff spot for the first time since 2018.
As they move closer to the semifinals with a scheduled Game 2 against the Indiana Fever, the focus remains on staying competitive. “Understanding that the job is not done in this series is key,” Smesko stated following their series-opening win. The Dream is once again poised for a strong playoff run, with hopes of a championship.
Smesko’s coaching style, which he refers to as ‘progress plans’ rather than practice plans, has resonated with the players. He encourages simple, strategic play that enhances individual strengths. Four-time All-Star Brionna Jones reflected on the clarity and purpose behind Smesko’s methods: “Everything he says has a reason, has a purpose, and it all makes sense.”
The Dream’s success is mirrored in Gray’s rise to become one of the league’s leading guards, averaging 18.4 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game. Padover recognized Gray as one of the most undervalued players prior to trading for her in January 2023, a move he felt would elevate the team’s performance.
“I was very bullish on what she could become here,” Padover said. Gray, who grew up nearby in South Carolina, has thrived in Atlanta, stating, “I feel like I’ve had the ultimate green light.”
The Dream’s winning strategy not only aims for immediate success but also focuses on building a culture where players are invested in remaining with the team, essential for maintaining competitive momentum. Padover highlighted the importance of continuity, stating, “Our foundation is coming from Atlanta.”
The franchise has made significant roster moves, including signing future Hall of Famer Brittney Griner, enhancing their playoff prospects. As the Dream continues its quest for a title, all eyes will be on Game 2 against the Fever.
