Bengal Bjp Leaders Bag Ministerial Berths In Modi's Third Nda Government

Hours before the swearing-in of Narendra Modi for his third term as Prime Minister, the NDA government made significant allocations for Bengal, appointing two state ministers from the region. Shantanu Thakur, already an MoS from Bongaon, retained his position while Sukanta Majumdar, the Bengal BJP president, secured a ministerial spot.

The earlier NDA administration had three MoS representatives from the state of Bengal, signifying a strategic move by the Modi-led government to include more regional voices in their cabinet.

Majumdar’s appointment to the ministerial post leads to a vacancy in the Bengal BJP presidency, as confirmed by the party’s constitution. The succession process is expected to take around two months to nominate a new state president, following established party guidelines. Majumdar assumed the state president role in 2021, succeeding Dilip Ghosh.

Both Majumdar and Thakur were summoned to Modi’s residence prior to the swearing-in ceremony, where they were informed of their new ministerial responsibilities. Majumdar expressed his willingness to work in any portfolio assigned to him, emphasizing the significance of representation for Balurghat in the central government.

Majumdar highlighted the unprecedented opportunity for Balurghat to have a minister at the Centre for the first time, underscoring the government’s commitment to inclusivity and regional development. He also mentioned a brief discussion with Modi regarding Bengal-specific issues, indicating proactive engagement on state concerns.

Thakur, who has been diligently serving as the minister of state for ports, shipping, and waterways, reiterated his focus on performance rather than ministerial positions. Reflecting on his tenure, he acknowledged the substantial progress in the shipping ministry during his term and expressed readiness to take on any new responsibilities assigned by the party.

Both leaders pledged to uphold the party’s vision and work towards fulfilling the Prime Minister’s objectives, showcasing unity and dedication within the BJP leadership in Bengal.
