Blackstone-Millville High School Closes After Social Media Threat
BLACKSTONE, Mass. — Blackstone-Millville Regional High School will remain closed Friday, January 31, following a social media threat made against a student and the school, officials announced Thursday night. The decision was made “out of an abundance of caution” despite authorities deeming the threat not credible.
The threat, reported by a high school student, prompted an immediate investigation by the Millville and Blackstone police departments. School Superintendent Jason DeFalco and Police Chief Gregory Gilmore confirmed the closure in a joint statement, emphasizing student safety as their top priority.
“Earlier tonight, Millville police received a report from a Blackstone-Millville Regional High School student about a threat made against them and the high school over social media,” authorities said in a news release. “Immediately, Millville police and Blackstone police initiated an investigation into the incident.”
While the high school remains closed, middle and elementary schools in the district will operate as scheduled. However, officials have increased police presence at those schools as a precautionary measure.
“Our first and foremost concern is for the safety of our students,” officials said. “This is an extreme step, but it’s taken with your children in mind. We will provide updates as the investigation continues.”
Authorities have not disclosed specific details about the nature of the threat or the social media platform involved. The investigation remains ongoing, with updates expected as new information emerges.
