Blount County Director of Schools Resigns After 27 Years of Service
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — David Murrell, the longtime director of Blount County Schools (BCS), resigned from his position on Monday, Jan. 6, 2025, after 27 years of service to the district. Murrell announced his decision in an email to the school system, citing “much prayer and careful consideration” as the basis for his resignation. He will return to a tenured faculty position within BCS.
Murrell has spent 18 years in the school system’s top office, including 14 years as both assistant director and director. His tenure has been marked by significant contributions to the district, which he described as a privilege in his resignation letter. “Serving as Assistant Director and Director for 14 years, 18 years at the Central Office, and a total of 27 years with the district, has given me the vantage point of seeing the very best of Blount County Schools,” Murrell wrote.
The Blount County Board of Education released a statement acknowledging Murrell’s service and expressing gratitude for his dedication. “Mr. Murrell has served the Blount County Schools community well for 27 years. We are so grateful for his service and wish him the very best in the future as he continues serving students and families,” the statement read.
The Board of Education will hold a regularly scheduled meeting on Jan. 9, 2025, at 5:30 PM to discuss plans for appointing an interim director of schools. The meeting will address the transition process and ensure continuity in leadership as the district moves forward.
Murrell’s resignation comes at a pivotal time for BCS, which has seen steady growth and development under his leadership. His decision to step down reflects a desire to return to a more hands-on role in education, focusing on students and faculty. “I look forward to being your colleague, and I know that together we will continue to make Blount County Strong,” Murrell wrote in his email.
The community has expressed widespread appreciation for Murrell’s contributions, with many praising his commitment to the district’s success. As BCS prepares for this leadership transition, the focus remains on maintaining the high standards set during Murrell’s tenure.
