Bonner Community Food Bank Struggles Amid Rising Costs

SANDPOINT, Idaho — The Bonner Community Food Bank, like many nonprofits, is facing challenges due to rising costs. Executive Director Debbie Love recently addressed the issue, emphasizing the importance of community support and grants from organizations such as the Idaho Community Foundation.
“It’s getting harder to meet the needs of our community,” Love said. “But support from donors and granting organizations keep us going.” The food bank plays a crucial role, providing food, dignity, and hope to families affected by economic hardship.
With locations in Sandpoint and Priest River, the food bank serves hundreds of households monthly, including working families, seniors on fixed incomes, and those facing temporary challenges. Beyond distributing pantry staples and fresh produce, the organization connects families to longer-term resources.
“Every dollar donated and every grant awarded translates directly into meals and support for our community,” Love said. “Philanthropy feeds families in a very real way.”
To enhance community giving, the Idaho Community Foundation has launched the “$200M Moment: Make More Good Possible” campaign. This initiative allows four residents to direct grants of at least $5,000 each to nonprofits in their regions, celebrating almost 40 years of partnership and generosity.
Idahoans aged 18 and older can enter the contest until July 30, with one winner chosen from each of the foundation’s four regions: East, North, South Central, and Southwest.
Moreover, participants can contribute directly to the prize pool or to their regional Forever Idaho Fund to boost local philanthropy. Foundation officials stress the significance of small to midsize nonprofits in addressing community needs.
“Philanthropy is about investing in the future of our communities,” said Jon Kimberling, an ICF board member. “Through ICF, we can ensure that our contributions have a lasting impact for generations to come.” More information is available by emailing [email protected].
