Cardinals Consider Major Trades Amid Upcoming Rebuild

St. Louis Cardinals Players In Context

St. Louis, MO – The St. Louis Cardinals are gearing up for a significant offseason rebuild, setting the stage for possible blockbuster trades. Veteran players including Sonny Gray, Nolan Arenado, and Willson Contreras are under consideration, though their no-trade clauses could complicate any potential deals.

Recent reports from Josh Jacobs of Redbird Rants suggest the New York Mets may be looking at Contreras. After an underwhelming 2025 season, the Mets must revamp their roster, especially if first baseman Pete Alonso leaves in free agency. If Alonso departs, Contreras could serve as a right-handed bat to support the lineup, despite not being as powerful a hitter.

Contreras’s trade would also benefit the Cardinals by freeing up funds and a position for younger players as they focus on rebuilding. However, concerns persist about Contreras’s temper and its potential impact on team dynamics.

Arenado is another player facing scrutiny. Although he has a no-trade clause and a hefty contract, the Cardinals appear motivated to explore trade options this winter. Jacobs cited interest from other teams, including the Toronto Blue Jays and even potential renewed interest from the Los Angeles Angels, particularly if Albert Pujols becomes their next manager.

The Angels were previously on Arenado’s list of acceptable teams for a trade, and this offseason could provide renewed opportunities. The Cardinals are reportedly open to covering part of Arenado’s contract to facilitate a trade.

With these moves, the Cardinals aim to reshape their team after a disappointing season.
