PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Satya G. Satyanand, the Jaime Carbonell University Professor of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University, was elected to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) on February 12, 2025, in recognition of his significant contributions to the fields of distributed file systems, edge computing, and mobile computing.
Considered a pioneer in edge computing, Satyanand is often referred to as “the father of edge computing” due to his influential 2009 paper. His research has extensively addressed critical challenges related to performance, scalability, availability, and trust in information systems, which span from centralized cloud services to mobile applications.
In his role at Carnegie Mellon, Satyanand leads innovative research initiatives within the School of Computer Science. He completed his Ph.D. in computer science at CMU, following his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras in Chennai, India.
The NAE welcomed 128 new members and 22 international members into its class of 2025, marking a prestigious acknowledgment in the engineering community. Membership in the NAE is one of the highest professional distinctions available to engineers. The formal induction ceremony for the new members is scheduled for the NAE’s Annual Meeting in October.
