Catastrophic Flooding Grips Ohio River Region as River Expected to Crest

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Catastrophic flooding has emerged across the Ohio River Valley as heavy rains culminated in rising waters on Monday morning. The Ohio River is projected to crest at 60.5 feet today, the highest level recorded since 2018, prompting widespread alerts and emergency declarations, particularly in Owen County.

According to meteorologist Randi Rico, the relentless downpour over the weekend, which dropped several inches of rain across the region, created hazardous conditions leading to significant flood warnings. ‘While the rain has lessened, flooding remains a serious concern,’ Rico stated. The river is expected to stay in moderate flood stage until Wednesday night before gradually receding.

In Pendleton County, authorities are facing dual crises: extensive flooding and an ongoing oil spill from a local garage into the Licking River. Officials declared a state of emergency as they assess the environmental impact of the spill. Giacomo Luca, a reporter at the scene, noted, ‘The oil spill is concerning as officials struggle to contain the situation amid rising waters.’ Several counties, including Campbell and Kenton, are reporting blocked roads and flooding in residential areas.

Officials warn that although the heaviest rainfall has subsided, flooding could worsen. At least 390 road closures were reported throughout Kentucky due to flooding, mudslides, and downed trees, according to Governor Andy Beshear. ‘Turn around, don’t drown,’ said Kentucky emergency manager, reminding residents to avoid flooded roads.

The Little Miami River and Great Miami River have also crested, while the Licking River is slowly descending after reaching critical levels. In Owen County, reports indicate that the Kentucky River is nearing its second-highest recorded crest, threatening local towns.

Local residents are advised to take precautions as cold air moves in after the rain clears. There is potential for a cold snap tonight, which could pose additional risks for affected areas still managing floodwaters. Recovery efforts are underway, with emergency crews responding to multiple rescue calls and assessing damage across flooded regions.
