Celebrating Women's Day At South African Ports

In a heartwarming gesture, the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) is celebrating Women’s Day this year by deploying an all-women crew at three of South Africa’s busiest ports. This special event takes place on Friday, 9 August, and is part of an annual tradition that highlights the contribution of women in the maritime industry.

The all-women shift will operate at the ports of Durban, Cape Town, and East London, showcasing the essential roles these talented women play in the daily workings of the ports. It’s not just a day of recognition; it’s also a chance to inspire the next generation.

In a move to encourage young girls interested in maritime studies, TNPA has invited top pupils studying maritime from local schools to join the shift. Fifteen bright learners from Soqhayisa Senior Secondary School in Gqeberha, Lawhill Maritime School in Cape Town, and Mowat Park High School in Durban have been selected to participate.

These students will have the incredible opportunity to job shadow accomplished female professionals in various maritime roles. This initiative aims to provide them with valuable insights into the industry, helping to pave the way for future careers in maritime fields.
