Charles County Schools Adjust Calendar After Multiple Weather Closures
LA PLATA, Md. — Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) has revised its academic calendar for the 2024-2025 school year after using three inclement weather closure days. The last day for students is now scheduled for Friday, June 13, while teachers will conclude their year on Monday, June 16. The changes come as the school system navigates state-mandated requirements for 180 instructional days.
CCPS initially identified four potential make-up days in June 2025 to account for weather-related disruptions. With three closure days already used this winter, the district has adjusted its schedule to ensure compliance with Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) regulations. June 6, 9, and 10, previously designated as early dismissal days, will now be full school days for students.
“The online CCPS calendar has been updated to reflect these changes,” a district spokesperson said. “Parents, staff, and teachers are encouraged to review the revised schedule.”
MSDE has also extended winter testing windows for the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP) due to statewide school closures. Additionally, CCPS has requested a waiver for one inclement weather day following Gov. Wes Moore‘s declaration of a state of emergency on Jan. 6. If approved, the waiver could further alter the academic calendar, but the district has yet to receive a response.
Charles County, located in Southern Maryland, serves 28,162 students across 38 schools. The district emphasizes a technologically advanced and inclusive education system, adhering to nondiscrimination policies in its programs and employment practices.
Meanwhile, neighboring Prince George’s County Public Schools announced a two-hour delay for Wednesday, Jan. 22, due to icy conditions. Emergency personnel are required to report on time, and breakfast services will remain available. However, half-day programs, field trips, and athletic events have been canceled, with limited transportation services available for extracurricular activities.
Parents and staff in both districts are advised to monitor official communication channels for further updates on weather-related schedule changes.
