Charlie Hunnam Delves Into Ed Gein’s Dark Legacy on Netflix

LOS ANGELES, CA — Charlie Hunnam takes on the chilling role of Ed Gein, the infamous Wisconsin serial killer, in the upcoming Netflix series, Monster: The Ed Gein Story. The show, produced by Ryan Murphy, premieres on October 3, 2025.
Gein, a notorious criminal in the 1950s, became infamous for his horrifying acts, which included grave robbery and the gruesome crafting of household items from human remains. Hunnam discussed his preparation for the role during an appearance on the TODAY show on September 30, explaining the cultural impact Gein had on modern horror.
“He’s a character who is very culturally influential, yet many have never heard of him,” Hunnam said. “He inspired films like Alfred Hitchcock‘s Psycho and The Silence of the Lambs.” Hunnam reflected on the emotional depth the series aims to explore, questioning who the real monster is: Gein, or the filmmakers who sensationalized his story.
To immerse himself in the character, Hunnam took a unique step by visiting Gein’s grave in Plainfield, Wisconsin. “I drove eight hours to say goodbye and hope we told his story honestly,” he said.
Ryan Murphy, the series creator, shared his vision behind the show, stating, “Every generation creates its own bogeyman. Today, we have to up the stakes of violence because we become desensitized.” Gein’s disturbing past stems from a troubled childhood under the influence of his domineering mother, Augusta, who he allegedly tried to replicate through his horrific acts.
Despite the evidence found in Gein’s home, he was only convicted of two murders. He spent his later years in a mental institution after being found guilty by reason of insanity. All eight episodes of Monster: The Ed Gein Story will be available for streaming on Netflix starting this Friday, October 3.
