The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Cheryl Murray, the actress best known for her role as Suzie Birchall on the longstanding British soap opera, “Coronation Street.” Murray, who was 71 at the time of her passing, was remembered fondly by ITV, the broadcaster of the series, in a heartfelt statement expressing condolences to her family and friends. “We are saddened to hear of the recent passing of Cheryl Murray,” the statement noted. “Her vibrant portrayal of Gail’s best friend and Elsie Tanner’s lodger Suzie Birchall lived on in the memories of fans long after Suzie left the cobbles for the bright lights of London.”

Murray first graced the screen of “Coronation Street” in 1977, stepping into the role of Suzie Birchall, Gail Potter’s best friend. Her character became a notable presence in Weatherfield until 1979 and made a brief return in 1983, further cementing her as a beloved figure by fans of the show.

Beyond her role on “Coronation Street,” Murray expanded her acting portfolio with a role in the music video for Morrissey‘s song “Everyday Is Like Sunday” and appeared as Joan Wainwright in the fourth series of the comedy “Hi-de-Hi!” Additionally, she portrayed Gillian in the popular 1980s comedy series, “Sorry!”

Unfortunately, Murray’s career came to a premature close following a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, an illness she bravely battled after experiencing her first attack while still active on “Coronation Street.” Reflecting on her experience with the disease, Murray once said, “MS has never really stopped me doing anything. I get attacks about once a year, but I have brilliant doctors who sort me out. Apart from being careful with steps because my legs can be a bit wobbly sometimes, I don’t think about it very often. Truly, I don’t.” She recounted a frightening moment in her Manchester flat when a sudden, severe back pain incapacitated her, leading her to believe she was dying as she crawled to the phone for help.

Cheryl Murray passed away on September 23 of the previous year. Her legacy and contributions to the British television landscape, particularly through her role on “Coronation Street,” continue to be cherished by her audience and colleagues alike.
