Russell M. Nelson Funeral Broadcast

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will hold a special broadcast to honor President Russell M. Nelson, who passed away on September 27, 2025, at the age of 101. The tribute will take place on October 1 at 10 a.m. MDT, just prior to the Church’s semiannual general conference.

This historic broadcast will feature remarks from various church leaders reflecting on President Nelson’s life and teachings. This event is particularly significant as it comes close to the general conference, a rare occurrence in the Church’s history.

Paul Reeve, a professor of Mormon Studies at the University of Utah, noted that the last time a prophet died so near to a general conference was in 1951. He explained that the previous president, George Albert Smith, died just days before the conference.

Following the general conference on October 4 and 5, public funeral services for President Nelson will be held on October 7 at the Conference Center in Salt Lake City. The funeral is open to the public for ages 8 and older, with tickets available online starting October 2.

During the special broadcast, church leaders and the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square will participate, paying tribute to President Nelson’s legacy as a leader known for his peacebuilding efforts and significant contributions to temple building.

“He announced 200 temples during his leadership,” Reeve commented, emphasizing the unprecedented expansion of church facilities under President Nelson’s presidency.

A public viewing will also take place on October 6, from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the Conference Center. Church officials encourage all members and the public to attend these events to pay their respects.

Expressions of sympathy can be expressed through social media or by contributing to the Humanitarian Aid Fund in lieu of flowers.
