Community Mourns Paul Rex Beardsley, Beloved Cadillac Resident

Cadillac, Michigan — Paul Rex Beardsley, a cherished member of the Cadillac community, passed away on Monday, September 15, 2025, at the Grand Traverse Pavilions. He was 93 years old.
Beardsley was born on October 2, 1931, in Traverse City, Michigan, to parents Robert and Stella (Glazier) Burns. He graduated from Traverse City High School and earned a doctorate at the Chicago College of Chiropody, now called the Dr. William M. Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine. In college, he was honored with the Terryberry Key award, recognizing him as the top student in his class.
On August 30, 1952, Beardsley married Helen M. Kelenske at Holy Rosary Catholic Church on the Leelanau Peninsula. Even while practicing as a licensed podiatrist, he served his country in the United States Army during the final years of the Korean War.
Beardsley had a varied career, transitioning from podiatry to a plant manager role for Reynolds Aluminum, and ultimately becoming an entrepreneur. He and Helen purchased the Sweet Shop in Cadillac in 1982, passing it to their daughter in 2002. Despite stepping back from ownership, he was a familiar face in the shop for many years.
Beardsley was woven into the community fabric, recognized for his generosity and willingness to help others. He contributed to St. Ann’s Parish, lent his voice to the Cadillac Marching Band, facilitated grief support groups, and volunteered countless hours in various community efforts. Known affectionately as the ‘Candy Man,’ he will be remembered not only for his sweet treats but for his kindness.
He is survived by his daughter, Janeen (Dan) Bundy of Manton; grandchildren, Jasmine Russell and John ‘JP’ (Tara) Russell, along with several sisters and extended family. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen, his parents, and several siblings-in-law.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 19, 2025, at St. Ann Catholic Church, with visitation beginning one hour prior. Rev. Michael Janowski will officiate. Memorial contributions can be made to the Cadillac Area Honor Guard and the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
Condolences and memories can be shared with the family online. The family is being assisted by Hitesman-Holdship Funeral Home.
