Students at Jesmond Public School came together in a vibrant display of cultural diversity to celebrate Harmony Day, a prelude to the official day on 21 March. The event brought together a melting pot of 29 cultures, showcasing the school’s commitment to inclusivity and unity.

Jesmond Public School, under the leadership of Principal James McGill, highlighted the significance of embracing different backgrounds, especially with over two-thirds of students speaking English as an additional language and a notable 13.4% identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. The timing of the celebration also allowed the community to partake in activities before the commencement of Ramadan.

Embracing the theme ‘Everyone Belongs,’ the school witnessed a remarkable display of cultural pride as students and staff donned traditional attire or the symbolic Harmony Day orange. The festivities extended beyond mere symbolic gestures, with engaging workshops conducted by community members.

From an Aboriginal artefact workshop to classes on Indonesian dance and insights into Swedish, Congolese, and Yazidi cultures by students from Callaghan College, Waratah Campus, the day was a testament to the richness of global heritage present within the school community.

Adding a flavorful touch to the celebration, students had the opportunity to learn about traditional Afghan cooking, further enriching their understanding of the diverse tapestry of global cuisine.

Principal McGill expressed his delight at the success of the day, emphasizing that for Jesmond Public School, every day is Harmony Day. The school’s commitment to fostering a sense of belonging and mutual support among students from various backgrounds remains a cornerstone of its educational approach.

As Harmony Week continues, the school’s dedication to promoting cultural understanding and unity serves as a shining example of the transformative power of education in building a more inclusive society.
