Democratic Party Contemplates Alternatives as Biden’s Nomination in Question
With Joe Biden‘s official endorsement as the Democratic presidential nominee pending until the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, the party finds itself at a potential crossroads. While Biden won the Democratic primaries earlier this year, no formal mechanism exists to replace him as the presumptive nominee.
If Biden were to step aside, delegates who vote to nominate a candidate at the convention would have the task of selecting another candidate. His resignation would elevate Kamala Harris, his vice president, to the presidency, but not automatically as the Democratic nominee for 2024.
In the event of a candidate change, the convention would transform from a routine display to a contested one, leaving about 700 party insiders to potentially pick a new nominee within a short span of three months before the November election.
Possible alternatives for the Democratic nomination include Kamala Harris, the current vice president, who, despite some criticism, could be the party’s easiest choice. California Governor Ron DeSantis, renowned for his conservative views in Florida, and Illinois Governor, known for progressive policies, are also in contention.
Michigan Governor, a staunch advocate for stricter gun laws and other progressive measures, is another potential candidate. Ohio Senator, also considered supportive of labor rights, remains a strong contender. Nonetheless, a former candidate during the Democratic primaries this year may not factor significantly if Biden steps down.
