Family Meal Immersive Dinner Theater

Los Angeles, CA – A unique dining experience called “Family Meal” is captivating audiences by diving into culinary chaos and family drama. The event, held at a luxurious residence, celebrates the retirement of chef Shelley Landwald and features his children fighting for ownership of his long-standing restaurant. This immersive theater experience by the Speakeasy Society invites guests to witness a blend of high-end dining with family discord.

Upon arrival, guests mingle at a reception, contemplating wine pairings and the upcoming six-course mystery menu. The atmosphere shifts dramatically when Landwald, played by Neill Fleming, commands his children to prepare signature dishes that reflect their identities and ambitions. As tensions rise, one sibling describes the night as “a culinary pissing match,” setting the tone for what is to come.

“Family Meal” brings the concept of dinner theater into the modern age. With elements inspired by shows like Anthony Bourdain’s “Kitchen Confidential” and “The Bear,” it encourages interaction between guests and the chaotic kitchen environment. Matthew Bamberg-Johnson, co-artistic director of the Speakeasy Society, emphasized the balance of revealing kitchen culture’s intensity while allowing guests to savor their meals.

Guests are not just passive observers; they participate in the drama unfolding around them. In one moment, a comforting salad made of mixed greens and roasted pumpkin becomes a battleground for accusations of mediocrity as siblings argue over its merit. Guests find themselves thrust into discussions about ingredients and family secrets, creating a truly interactive experience.

Chef Ben Baron, who curated the menu, shares that the idea for “Family Meal” was inspired by an immersive theater experience he had in New York. With a background in prestigious kitchens, including Petit Trois and Bestia, Baron skillfully intertwines his personal culinary journey with the fictional family drama.

Ticket prices start at $340, and while some may find this steep, the experience promises an intimate connection to the unfolding story. Speakeasy has raised approximately $21,000 through crowdfunding to support production costs. The company aims to expand “Family Meal” to other locations, including Palm Springs, and explore new seasonal menus for repeat visitors.

As “Family Meal” navigates the tensions of restaurant dynamics and reveals the beautiful yet complex nature of food, it offers audiences more than a meal—it provides a glimpse into the messy realities behind culinary artistry.
