Dollar General Cuts Stores: Miami Valley Location Shutters Permanently

DAYTON, Ohio — Dollar General announced that it will close 96 stores nationwide, including a location in the Miami Valley, as part of a strategy to strengthen its business operations. The closures are expected to be finalized by the end of January 2026.
Approximately 45 Popshelf locations will also shut down, according to the company. Despite the number of closures, Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos stated that these represent less than 1 percent of the company’s total store base, which includes over 20,400 stores across the United States and 1,021 locations in Ohio.
Last night, the Dollar General located at the intersection of Salem and Grand Avenue in Dayton held its final liquidation sale, attracting local residents before its permanent closure at 7 p.m. “I’m kind of disappointed because it’s very convenient and everything, but things happen,” said Dayton resident Tracie Lapaugh.
The decision to close specific stores was made based on their performance and projected future profitability. Vasos commented, “While the number of closings represents less than one percent of our overall store base, we believe this decision better positions us to serve our customers and communities.”
Dollar General has been shifting its business approach as the retail landscape evolves, with many families turning to budget-friendly options to stretch their shopping dollars. The chain aims to build on the progress made in its fiscal 2024 initiatives, aiming to enhance its foundational operations.
The closures come amid a broader trend within the retail sector, where numerous chains are reevaluating their presence and operational efficiency. Currently, Dollar General operates over 20,000 stores, including its various brands such as DG Market and DGX, across 48 states.
Following the closure of this Dayton location, Questions are being raised about whether other stores in the Miami Valley will also shut down, with News Center 7 working to provide updates as more information becomes available.
