WASHINGTON (AP) — Elon Musk, the world’s richest man, is deeply ingrained in President Donald Trump‘s administration as he leads efforts to streamline government operations, but his influence comes shrouded in secrecy. Musk, serving as a special government employee, is not mandated to publicly disclose his financial interests, a measure that has raised eyebrows among good government watchdogs.
A White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed that Musk will file a confidential financial disclosure report. This comes as Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) engages in an aggressive restructuring of federal agencies, prompting both praise and backlash from various stakeholders.
Musk’s involvement with DOGE aligns with an executive mandate to identify and eliminate governmental inefficiencies, but the exact nature of his access and influence remains largely opaque. Critics argue this lack of transparency could obscure conflicts of interest given Musk’s extensive business dealings, which include ventures in sectors directly involved with the federal government.
“There is a legitimate concern that without public scrutiny, Musk’s actions could benefit his businesses at taxpayer expense,” said Jordan Libowitz, vice president of communications for Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW). “The public deserves to know the potential conflicts of interest at play here.”
During a team briefing this week, Musk was reportedly educated on ethics obligations, affirming that although he remains unpaid by the government, he is still classified as a temporary employee engaged in a significant role.
Details surrounding the financial disclosures required by the Ethics in Government Act are meant to highlight possible conflicts of interest. High-ranking officials, including Cabinet nominees and designated special government employees, must declare their assets and affiliations. However, because Musk is not on the federal payroll, a loophole potentially circumvents public reporting.
“This situation creates an ambiguity that hardly serves the principle of transparency we should expect from our government,” said Scott Amey, general counsel for the Project on Government Oversight. “The impact of these decisions could have far-reaching implications regarding federal contracts and policy-making.”
Musk oversees a portfolio that includes SpaceX, Tesla, X (formerly Twitter), The Boring Company, and Neuralink, all of which have significant governmental ties, raising concerns about the impartiality of his decisions as part of DOGE’s efforts.
As this undercurrent runs through Musk’s activities, the administration under Trump has confronted allegations related to privacy infringements. Recent questions arose regarding the data access DOGE employees might possess, especially sensitive information linked to U.S. citizens, with some critics calling attention to ongoing alignment with the Treasury Department.
“Why should he, or anyone in his position, have access to such sensitive data without adequate oversight?” queried political analysts. “That raises questions not only about Musk’s role but about the administration’s commitment to ethical governance.”
During a press conference, President Trump noted Musk’s actions in identifying “fraud and waste” within the government, proclaiming satisfaction with progress in dismantling perceived bureaucratic inefficiencies. However, this sentiment is not universally shared, with congressional Democrats expressing frustration over suspicions surrounding Musk’s concentrated power.
For example, Rep. Gerald Connolly of Virginia pointedly queried: “Who is this unelected billionaire who can dismantle federal agencies without oversight?” This sentiment has resonated across party lines, with Democrats alleging that his presence signifies an undue influence over federal operations.
Despite the ongoing scrutiny, the White House maintains that DOGE’s mission is rooted in transparency and accountability. Musk is expected to communicate the outcomes of DOGE’s initiatives in the future, but critics remain wary of unfulfilled promises of openness.
Legal scrutiny surrounding DOGE is intensifying, with lawsuits filed on behalf of federal workers and watchdog organizations questioning its legal standing and operational scope. As actions taken by DOGE fluctuate between reform and chaos, many federal employees express worry over the impact on their job security and governmental integrity.
As DOGE continues its work across various agencies, including the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Education, it remains unclear how the balance of influence will play out amidst ongoing discussions about governance transparency, ethical oversight, and Musk’s overarching presence in an evolving political landscape.
