Energy Initiatives Blossoming In Vermont's Northeast Kingdom

Several energy initiatives are currently underway in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom, spearheaded by organizations like the Northeastern Vermont Development Association (NVDA). From exploring Thermal Energy Networks to hosting design charrettes, the region is buzzing with sustainable energy projects.

The NVDA recently partnered with other organizations to host an event focusing on Health Equity in Municipal Planning, aiming to ensure fairness in health opportunities across communities in the Kingdom. The goal is to incorporate health equity into municipal planning documents and bylaws.

On the horizon is AIA Vermont’s “Hardy by Design” resilient design charrette event scheduled for May 2024. Towns throughout the state have been invited to submit projects that could benefit from architectural input at this event, which aims to provide pro-bono design assistance for resilient community development projects.

Locals are also gearing up for an informative event titled “Weatherization Pays You Back set to take place in Greensboro UCC. Energy experts will share tips on enhancing home comfort and reducing energy bills, sponsored by a volunteer group from various towns.

The Energy Action Network (EAN) has launched a new energy progress dashboard, offering insights into Vermont’s local energy initiatives. EAN is also hosting a webinar on the new dashboard, alongside a speaker series event on evolving the grid as we transition to electrifying everything.

Meanwhile, changes to the Investment Tax Credit for solar and battery storage projects are creating opportunities for nonprofit organizations and underserved communities to access clean, resilient power solutions. Clean Energy Group has detailed these changes, highlighting the potential impact on community energy projects.

Another key development is the Weatherization Repayment Assistance Program (WRAP), designed to help homeowners pay back weatherization upgrades over time. Vermont Housing Finance Agency will be hosting a webinar to educate communities on the benefits and eligibility criteria for WRAP.

Local energy committees in the Northeast Kingdom will gather for their quarterly meeting to collaborate, share best practices, and address challenges in advancing energy initiatives across the region. The meeting aims to foster cooperation and resource-sharing among NEK Energy Committees and partners.

Communities in the Northeast Kingdom are encouraged to take advantage of the Municipal Energy Revolving Loan Fund (MERP) Mini-Grants before the May 31st deadline, providing funding for local education, outreach, and capacity-building in sustainable energy projects.
