Winnipeg Blue Bombers Suffer Fourth Consecutive Loss in Nail-Biter Against Calgary Stampeders
The Winnipeg Blue Bombers‘ woes continued as they suffered their fourth straight defeat in a heart-wrenching showdown against the Calgary Stampeders. The game unfolded in front of a fervent crowd at McMahon Stadium, with 22,386 fans witnessing the Blue Bombers fall short in overtime.
The crushing loss was compounded by a significant setback to the Blue Bombers’ offense as quarterback Zach Collaros was forced to exit the game at halftime. Collaros took a brutal hit to the chest, courtesy of Stampeders’ defensive tackle Josiah Coatney, and did not return to the field.
Despite a laundry list of injuries that includes key starters like Dalton Schoen, Kenny Lawler, and Keric Wheatfall, the Blue Bombers displayed unwavering resilience throughout the game. Even with the odds stacked against them, they fought valiantly, narrowly missing out on a potential comeback victory.
Chris Streveler stepped up in Collaros’ absence, guiding the offense and connecting with Drew Wolitarsky for a crucial touchdown that sent the game into overtime. However, a late interception in the extra period dashed the Blue Bombers’ hopes, allowing the Stampeders to secure a 22-19 victory with a 52-yard field goal by Rene Paredes.
Reflecting on the tough loss, Streveler emphasized the need to learn from the mistakes and regroup for the challenges ahead. The Blue Bombers have faced a series of close defeats, with this latest setback marking their first 0-4 start to a season since 2012.
In the post-game analysis, head coach Mike O’Shea addressed Collaros’ injury, describing the decision to keep him out as precautionary. Streveler’s performance under center showcased moments of promise, but offensive miscues and penalties ultimately hindered the team’s efforts to secure a much-needed victory.
The Blue Bombers’ defense put up a commendable fight, limiting the Stampeders’ offense and forcing turnovers. Kicker Sergio Castillo also etched his name in the record books with a record-breaking 60-yard field goal, although individual milestones offered little solace in the face of another defeat.
Looking ahead, the Blue Bombers will return home to Princess Auto Stadium for their next game against the Ottawa RedBlacks. With their backs against the wall, the team is determined to turn the tide and bounce back from their early-season struggles.
