FDNY Firefighter Patrick Brady Dies During Brooklyn Blaze
Brooklyn, NY — An FDNY firefighter was killed while fighting an all-hands blaze on Saturday night. Firefighter Patrick Brady, 42, suffered a heart attack while responding to the fire at a six-story apartment building on Kings Highway in Brownsville, city officials confirmed.
Brady collapsed around 9:38 p.m. while working on the roof of the burning building, and first responders attempted to revive him at the scene. He was transported to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead. Mayor Eric Adams and FDNY Commissioner Robert S. Tucker made the announcement late Saturday.
<p“Firefighter Patrick Brady gave his life protecting the city we all love; there is no sacrifice that is more selfless,” Mayor Adams told reporters. He extended condolences to Brady's family, including his wife, Kara, and his brothers, Jimmy and Brian, who are also firefighters.
The 11-year veteran of the FDNY had been working with Engine 227 before transferring to Ladder 120 in 2022. According to officials, Brady’s death is the second line-of-duty loss for the FDNY in the past two weeks.
First Deputy Fire Commissioner Mark Guerra remarked on the tragedy, saying, “He died at a fire in Brownsville, Brooklyn, carrying out the greatest traditions of the FDNY.”
Brady, a Belle Harbor resident, is the 1,163rd member of the FDNY to die in the line of duty. As news of his passing spread, about 250 fellow firefighters lined up outside Brookdale Hospital early Sunday morning to pay their respects as his body was prepared for transfer.
<p“This is called a dignified transfer,” veteran first responder David Burns explained. “It’s a show of honor and respect that his coworkers will line up and salute him as he’s brought out.”
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, and funeral arrangements are pending.
