FREDERICK, Md. – Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) has disclosed the results of a community survey regarding academic calendar options for the 2026-27 school year. Out of 2,350 responses from parents, students, staff, and community members, a significant majority, 41%, favored a calendar that would start classes on August 19, 2026, and end on June 4, 2027.
The survey was designed to gauge public sentiment about the proposed academic calendars. Other options included starting school earlier and ending later, which did not receive as much support from participants. The objective of the survey was to create a calendar that aligns with community preferences and educational goals.
“We value the input of our community as we plan for the future,” said FCPS Superintendent Dr. Terry Alban. “Listening to our families and staff helps us create a calendar that supports student success and meets the needs of our community.”
In an effort to enhance community engagement, FCPS invited participants to provide feedback through various platforms, ensuring that everyone had an opportunity to voice their opinions. The results of the calendar options were compiled and analyzed to inform the final decision.
The state of Maryland has specific guidelines regarding the start and end dates of the school year, which FCPS must adhere to while accommodating community feedback. This year’s survey marks a continued effort by the school district to include stakeholder opinions in academic planning.
Following this survey, the school board is expected to discuss the results and make a final decision in an upcoming meeting. The new academic calendar will then be published and circulated to all stakeholders in the school community.
