Caspian Sea Fiber Optic Cable Project

Germany has received an invitation to take part in the construction of a fiber-optic communication line across the Caspian Sea. This strategic initiative is being spearheaded by Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. The Kazakh President, Kasim-Jomart Tokayev, extended this proposal during a recent meeting in Astana, which was attended by leaders from Central Asia and Germany.

President Tokayev emphasized the importance of this project, highlighting its goal of transmitting “green energy” and improving connectivity between Europe and Central Asia. The undertaking involves a collaborative effort between AzerTelecom and Kazakhstan Telecom. It became official in June 2023 when a shareholders agreement was signed for the Trans-Caspian Fiber-Optic Communication Line.

The project will feature a 380 km cable line, boasting a transmission capacity of 400 terabits per second. The inclusion of Germany in this venture underscores the project’s significance and its potential for fostering international partnerships.
