Gwinnett County at the Forefront of 2024 Elections: Housing Crisis and Voter Turnout

Gwinnett County Election Polling Station

Gwinnett County, a diverse and rapidly growing suburb of Atlanta, is once again in the spotlight as a bellwether county for the 2024 presidential election. Known for its significant influence on state and national elections, Gwinnett County has seen a surge in voter turnout, with more than half of its registered voters already casting their ballots, smashing previous records.

The county’s housing crisis is emerging as a critical issue that could sway voter decisions. Many residents, like Angel Berry, are struggling with skyrocketing housing costs. Since moving to Georgia in 2018, Berry has seen her rent increase from $1,300 to over $1,800 per month, making it difficult for her to afford basic necessities and save for a home of her own.

The housing crisis is part of a broader economic concern that both Democratic and Republican campaigns are addressing. The Biden administration faces challenges from voters who are feeling the economic squeeze, while the Trump campaign is targeting Black male Democrats in the county, hoping to flip their votes by highlighting economic issues such as high housing costs and living expenses.

In addition to economic concerns, the county has recently seen enhanced election safety protocols due to a fake text thread that sparked unnecessary alarm, although the Gwinnett County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed there is no credible threat.

The county’s demographic changes and rapid growth are also significant factors. Gwinnett County has transformed from a mostly white, rural suburb to a diverse community with nearly 1 million residents. This shift is reflected in its voting patterns, with Biden winning the county by 18 points in the 2020 election. However, the current election is expected to be closely contested, with both campaigns focusing on key issues like housing and the economy).
