WASHINGTON, D.C. — Former professional football player and Senate candidate Herschel Walker is set to appear before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Thursday. President Donald Trump nominated Walker to serve as the next American ambassador to the Bahamas.

Walker, a Heisman Trophy winner, gained notoriety during his 2022 Senate campaign in Georgia, where he was defeated by Democrat Senator Raphael Warnock. His campaign drew considerable media attention, particularly due to several gaffes, including Walker’s comments about vampires. “Vampires are cool people,” Walker said at a campaign event. He went on to explain a fictional scenario about werewolves and vampires that left many questioning his seriousness.

During a speech on November 29, 2022, Walker raised eyebrows again with his views on border security. “A wall do work,” he stated, while struggling to articulate how effective it would be. This was another point of criticism, as many voters expressed concern about his grasp of key issues.

Additionally, Walker faced scrutiny for previous remarks he made about his son, Christian Walker, labeling him an “ugly baby” due to his wife’s “awful genes.” This comment resurfaced during the midterms, prompting backlash from both the public and his son.

Christian Walker addressed the public’s concern in an October 2022 tweet, urging his father to stop lying about their family. “You’re not a ‘family man’ when you left us to bang a bunch of women,” he wrote, highlighting deeper family issues.

Walker has faced multiple controversies over his claims, including one about being an honorary deputy sheriff, which was dismissed by the Cobb County Police Department. His Senate run was marred by allegations of past personal conduct, including a claim over funding an abortion.

As he prepares to plead his case before the Senate committee for the ambassador position, it is unclear whether Republican senators will support his nomination given his past statements and the scrutiny he has encountered.
