Hilary Swank to Keynote Chapman University Commencement on May 23

ORANGE, Calif. — Chapman University will celebrate the achievements of more than 2,600 graduates during its 2025 Commencement Weekend from May 23 to 25. The highlight will be the main ceremony on Friday, May 23, at 7 p.m. on Wilson Field featuring keynote speaker Hilary Swank.
Swank, an acclaimed actress and producer, is a two-time Academy Award winner known for her roles in “Boys Don’t Cry” and “Million Dollar Baby.” She will receive an honorary Doctor of Arts degree during the ceremony for her contributions to the arts and community.
This year’s ceremony is significant as it will be the last for President Daniele C. Struppa, who is retiring in September after 19 years at Chapman. He will be joined on stage by Swank to inspire graduates.
Graduates will receive their diplomas at individual ceremonies for each of Chapman’s 11 schools and colleges throughout the weekend. A full schedule of events is available on the university’s website.
In addition to Swank, Chapman will also honor three individuals with honorary degrees. John Badham, a renowned director, will receive a Doctor of Arts degree for his extensive influence in the film industry and education. Dr. Carolyn Forché, a celebrated poet and advocate for human rights, will also be recognized with a Doctor of Arts degree for her impactful work.
Ronald M. Simon, a businessman and philanthropist, will receive a Doctor of the University degree for his dedication to education and community service through the Simon Family Foundation, which has provided substantial scholarships to students pursuing higher education.
A Candlelight Blessing of the Graduates will take place on Thursday, May 22, at Aitken Arts Plaza. This event is open to all graduates and their families.
The commencement ceremonies are free for graduates and their families, but tickets are required. Following the main ceremony, guests are invited to a champagne toast with President Struppa, along with a fireworks display.
