HEMPSTEAD, New York – A graduating student from Hofstra University shared her journey of personal and academic growth in a heartfelt editorial published in The Hofstra Chronicle on May 6, 2025. Through challenges and unexpected changes, she discovered her true passions in education and journalism.

Starting as a freshman physics major, the student was excited to pursue her long-held dream. However, self-doubt soon crept in, leading her to question her place in the field. Ultimately, she decided to shift her focus away from physics, not from lack of interest but from a feeling of being lost.

Despite uncertainty, her love for storytelling remained a vital part of her life. The Hofstra Chronicle became a creative outlet, where she expressed gratitude towards former News Editors Ahjané Forbes, Megan Naftali, and Madeline Armstrong. ‘Their mentorship gave me space to grow as a writer,’ she said.

The decision to change her major to education was also inspired by her mother, who instilled in her the value of teaching and learning. This new direction opened opportunities in academic research through Dr. Tomeka M. Robinson at the Stuart and Nancy Rabinowitz Honors College.

During her research experience at the Center for “Race,” Culture and Social Justice, she met several mentors, including Dr. Veronica Lippencott and Dr. Jonathan Lightfoot. ‘Their guidance allowed me to contribute meaningfully to research that impacts communities,’ she mentioned.

Her development further accelerated in classes led by Dr. Brian Cox, where she could connect her student teaching experiences with course content. ‘These courses reshaped how I understand learning and teaching,’ she explained.

Throughout her college years, The Chronicle was a source of support, with peers like Lily Spinda, Giovanni Salsa, Camryn Bowden, Julia Capitelli, and Gabe Prevots making long nights manageable. ‘Lily, Gio, and Camryn made those nights memorable,’ she reflected, acknowledging their camaraderie.

Looking back, the student expressed gratitude for her unexpected journey. ‘Every pivot, every detour, and every mentor guided me,’ she said. Although uncertain about the future, she plans to continue blending her interests in education, psychology, and journalism, reaffirming that sometimes the detour leads to exactly where one needs to go.
