Homeland Security Secretary Noem to Address Michigan GOP Conference

MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. — U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem will speak Friday night at the Michigan Republican Party’s 36th biennial conference at the Grand Hotel.
Noem, a key figure in President Donald Trump‘s administration, was recently added to the schedule for the three-day event, which aims to showcase new talent within the GOP. State Sen. Jim Runestad, chairman of the Michigan Republican Party, expressed hopes that this year’s conference will inspire a “renewed enthusiasm” among attendees.
As of now, 1,038 people have registered for the conference, a significant increase from previous years. Two years ago, attendance numbers ranged from 300 to 800, well below the typical turnout of 1,500 to 2,000.
Last conference chairwoman Kristina Karamo faced difficulties, creating a rift within the party. In one speech, she denounced speculation over her resignation. “Pound sand,” Karamo said, in an expression of her firm stance against detractors. Ultimately, she lost her role as chairwoman.
This year’s event is set to host influential speakers, including Chris LaCivita, co-campaign manager of Trump’s 2024 campaign, and Clay Travis, a writer and radio host. A panel discussion featuring GOP gubernatorial candidates is also planned.
However, political consultant Dennis Lennox noted that recent GOP conferences have struggled to attract prominent national figures and appealing crowds compared to the past. He pointed out that the party’s current standing, being in the minority in Lansing, limits its influence and appeal.
“They’re still in the minority in Lansing,” Lennox said. “You don’t have a Republican governor. You don’t have a Republican Senate majority leader.”
