Houston Schools Reopening After Snow Days 2025

HOUSTON — Most students in the Greater Houston area will return to school on Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025, after a series of snow days and the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. However, several districts and institutions will remain closed or operate on delayed schedules due to lingering weather concerns.

Houston ISD, the largest school district in the region, will resume normal operations, along with many other districts. However, Crosby ISD, Dayton ISD, East Chambers ISD, Hardin ISD, and Liberty ISD will remain closed on Thursday. Cleveland ISD will open with a two-hour delay, while Prairie View A&M University will also delay its start time by two hours, requiring staff and students to arrive by 10 a.m.

Rice University, a prominent private institution, will operate remotely on Thursday. The university cited safety concerns and the need to allow additional time for road conditions to improve.

School officials across the region have urged parents and students to exercise caution while traveling. “We understand the challenges these weather conditions present, and safety remains our top priority,” said a spokesperson for Houston ISD.

The closures and delays come after a winter storm brought freezing temperatures and icy conditions to the Houston area earlier this week. The National Weather Service had issued warnings for hazardous road conditions, particularly in rural and suburban areas.

Parents and students are advised to check their respective school district websites for updates on schedules and safety protocols. As the region continues to recover from the winter weather, officials remain vigilant about ensuring the safety of students and staff.
