BOISE, Idaho — Australian director Justin Kurzel returns to form with ‘The Order,’ a gripping 1980s-set thriller that delves into the chilling world of neo-Nazi terrorism. Starring Jude Law and Nicholas Hoult, the film follows an FBI agent and a charismatic terrorist leader in a cat-and-mouse race against time.
Kurzel, known for his exploration of radicalized white men in films like ‘Snowtown‘ and ‘Nitram,’ shifts his focus to the U.S. with ‘The Order.’ The movie is loosely based on the true story of Bob Mathews, who founded a violent splinter group inspired by the racist novel ‘The Turner Diaries.’ Hoult brings intensity to the role of Mathews, while Law portrays Terry Husk, a grizzled FBI agent with a relentless drive to stop him.
The film captures the stark beauty of Idaho’s landscapes, contrasting the natural splendor with the ugliness of the characters’ ideologies. Kurzel’s collaboration with cinematographer Adam Arkapaw and composer Jed Kurzel enhances the tension, making the action scenes brutal and impactful. Historian Kathleen Belew notes the eerie parallels between the film’s events and modern-day white nationalism, highlighting the enduring influence of ‘The Turner Diaries.’
With strong performances and a tense narrative, ‘The Order’ not only serves as a superior thriller but also provides a chilling look at the roots of domestic terrorism, leaving audiences to ponder the disturbing echoes of the past in today’s world.
