Kansas City Metro Schools Close or Shift to Remote Learning Amid Winter Storm
Several school districts in the Kansas City metro area announced closures or transitions to remote learning on Friday, January 10, 2025, as a winter storm brought hazardous road conditions and up to three inches of snow. The decision impacts thousands of students across Kansas and Missouri, with many districts opting for virtual instruction to ensure safety amid the severe weather.
According to KMBC, Kansas City Public Schools, Blue Springs School District, and KCK Public Schools are among the districts that will not hold in-person classes. Lee’s Summit School District and Raytown School District will shift to remote learning, while others, such as Belton and Fort Osage R1, have declared Alternative Methods of Instruction (AMI) days or virtual learning days.
The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for the region, warning of slippery roads and reduced visibility due to snow accumulation. “The safety of our students and staff is our top priority,” said a spokesperson for Kansas City Public Schools. “We encourage families to stay updated on weather conditions and plan accordingly.”
In addition to school closures, some government facilities and community centers have also adjusted their operations. A full list of closures and remote learning announcements is available on local news websites and district social media pages.
This marks the second significant weather disruption for the Kansas City area in 2025, following a heavy snowstorm earlier in January that left many residents digging out for days. Meteorologists predict that the current system will move out of the region by Saturday, but temperatures are expected to remain below freezing, prolonging icy conditions.
