Kyle Chandler in Talks for Lead Role in HBO’s ‘Lanterns’ Series
Kyle Chandler is reportedly in negotiations for a lead role in the Green Lantern series “Lanterns” at HBO, according to sources confirmed by Variety. Chandler is anticipated to portray Hal Jordan, a key figure in the DC Comics universe known as a prominent member of the Green Lantern Corps. As of now, casting for the role of John Stewart, another significant character in the series, has not been finalized.
Representatives for HBO and Warner Bros. Television have declined to comment on the casting developments. Likewise, Chandler’s representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Variety. Previously, it was reported that actor Josh Brolin had been considered for the role of Hal Jordan but decided against taking it.
Chandler is an Emmy Award-winning actor, renowned for his portrayal of Coach Eric Taylor in the high school football drama “Friday Night Lights,” which aired on NBC from 2006 to 2011. His performance in the series earned him the Emmy for Best Actor in a Drama Series in 2011. Chandler’s other notable television credits include “Bloodline” on Netflix and “Early Edition” on CBS. In film, he has appeared in features like “Manchester by the Sea,” “Super 8,” and “Argo.”
“Lanterns,” which received a straight-to-series order in June, will consist of eight episodes. The series will focus on characters Hal Jordan and John Stewart, described as “two intergalactic cops” investigating a dark mystery that originates in the American heartland. The narrative aims to blend classic superhero themes with a gritty, detective story vibe.
The project is being developed under the collaborative efforts of Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are also executive producers. Mundy serves as the showrunner, while the production is managed by Warner Bros. TV in association with DC Studios and HBO.
“Lanterns” is among several high-profile productions currently being developed under the DC Studios brand, which is headed by James Gunn and Peter Safran. Other upcoming projects include the series “The Penguin,” featuring Colin Farrell, and the animated “Creature Commandos,” set to premiere on Max in December. Additionally, preparations are underway for the second season of “Peacemaker,” starring John Cena.
