Labour Party Reorganizes Leadership, Appoints Caretaker Committee
The Labour Party (LP) has officially announced the removal of its national chairman, Comrade Julius Abure, and the members of its National Executive Committee (NEC). This decision follows a meeting held in Umuahia, led by the party’s prominent figure, Mr. Peter Obi.
To address the leadership void, a 29-member caretaker committee has been established. Senator Esther Nenadi Usman has been appointed as the chairperson of this committee, while Hon. Darlington Nwokocha will serve as the secretary.
The meeting, which was attended by various party stakeholders including federal and state lawmakers, resulted in a five-point communique. It stated that Abure’s tenure had expired in June, and thus, he lacked the legitimacy to remain in the position of national chairman.
The caretaker committee has been charged with the responsibility to ensure the conduct of congresses at the ward, local government, state, and national levels within three months, allowing for the election of new party leaders.
Mr. Obi, addressing the attendees, emphasized the importance of due process in resolving the ongoing conflicts within the party and urged all members to support the caretaker committee’s initiatives. He underscored the need for unity and sacrifices for the common good of the Labour Party.
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, who hosted the pivotal meeting, commended the efforts made to enhance the party’s organizational structure. He highlighted the necessity for all party stakeholders to collaborate in overcoming existing challenges.
Senator Usman acknowledged the significant task ahead for the caretaker committee and expressed her commitment to restoring the party’s integrity and attracting new members.
