Leaked Group Chat Sparks Outcry from Republican Leaders Over Racist Comments

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A recent leaked group chat among members of the Young Republican National Federation has ignited outrage across party lines due to its use of racist language, jokes about violence, and flippant references to gas chambers. Bipartisan leaders are calling for the resignation of those involved following the revelations published by Politico.
The Young Republican National Federation, representing Republicans aged 18 to 40, stated that the language used in the chat is “unbecoming of any Republican” and is urging those who participated to step down from their roles. Republican Vice President JD Vance, however, has defended the individuals involved, suggesting that concerns over the leaked messages are an overreaction.
Politico’s report disclosed months of exchanges from a Telegram chat that included members from the Young Republican chapters in New York, Vermont, Kansas, and Arizona. The content of these messages raised alarm, with many participants seemingly aware of the potential implications of their discussions, expressing fears that the chat may be exposed.
Vance defended the group members during an episode of “The Charlie Kirk Show,” arguing that political violence is a far greater issue than the discussions among Republicans. He also discussed his views on how today’s youth are under scrutiny for comments made in private settings. “Kids do stupid things, especially young boys. They tell edgy, offensive jokes,” Vance said.
Contrarily, many Republican leaders are taking a firmer stance. Vermont Governor Phil Scott has demanded the immediate resignation of state Sen. Sam Douglass, who was identified as a participant in the chat. Scott described the rhetoric as “disgusting and unacceptable” and emphasized the need for accountability within the party.
New York Representative Elise Stefanik expressed her shock, stating she was “appalled” by the messages and insisted on resignations. Kansas GOP Chair Danedri Herbert similarly denounced the inflammatory remarks, declaring that such views do not represent Kansas Republicans.
In response to the fallout, the Young Republican National Federation released a statement condemning the language, labeling it “vile and inexcusable.” They reiterated their commitment to maintaining the integrity of their organization and state that individuals involved should resign from all associated positions.
Democrats have also voiced their condemnation. California Governor Gavin Newsom called for a Congressional investigation into the matter, while Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer decried the chat as “revolting,” urging Republican leaders to swiftly denounce the messages.
As the controversy unfolds, the Young Republican National Federation is working to salvage its reputation amid calls for reforming the organization and the broader political climate surrounding its membership.
