Liberty University Hosts Massive Commencement for 30,000 Graduates

Lynchburg, Virginia — An expected 60,000 attendees will converge on Liberty University’s campus this week for the largest event in Central Virginia, celebrating the Class of 2025. Over three days, from May 5 to May 7, graduates will receive more than 30,000 conferred degrees, a stark increase from the 57 graduates in Liberty’s first Commencement in 1974.
The Main Ceremony is set for Friday at 7 p.m. in Williams Stadium, featuring a keynote address from Glenn Youngkin, the 74th Governor of Virginia. A new highlight this year is a drone show finale, which will use 300 drones to illuminate the night sky with a visual narrative themed around Liberty.
In addition to the Main Ceremony, 28 individual degree presentations will occur across six venues, including Liberty Arena, Vines Center, and Thomas Road Baptist Church. A special Military Graduate Recognition Ceremony will honor over 7,129 graduates with military ties on Thursday morning. An Alumni Reception will also be held, giving new graduates a chance to connect with alumni chapters.
Program Manager Lori Boyce emphasizes the unique integration of worship and Gospel at Liberty’s Commencement. “We feel it is the highest priority we have as we thank God for His blessings and ask for His protection and direction,” she said. Students from various music groups will perform during the pre-show as guests arrive.
Behind the scenes, thousands of staff and faculty are preparing for the event. Boyce has been planning Commencements at Liberty for 18 years and describes it as a significant responsibility. “Graduation is one of the biggest moments in our graduates’ lives,” she said. “It is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication.”
The Event Management team began preparations as early as April 28, while Broadcast Communications has been setting up sound and video equipment for the ceremonies. Executive Producer Bobby Keating noted that his team is focused on creating lasting memories for graduates and their families.
Safety is paramount, with the Office of Security & Public Safety collaborating with local law enforcement agencies to ensure a secure environment. They will also deploy drones for aerial monitoring of the campus during the events.
As part of the festivities, multiple food trucks and vendors will provide dining options around campus. Guests are encouraged to take part in tours and visit notable sites, including Lynchburg’s Freedom Tower. A Commencement Welcome Fair will kick off Wednesday with activities for graduates.
“This Commencement will be fantastic for the entire community,” added Marcus Tinsley, Vice President of Security & Public Safety. “Protection through service is our mission.”
