Loudoun County Schools Close Amid Winter Freeze, Lenoir Students Earn Presidential Honors

LEESBURG, Va. — Loudoun County Public Schools canceled classes for Tuesday as the region grapples with a lingering winter storm and a deep freeze expected to keep temperatures at or below 20 degrees through Wednesday. The closure follows a Sunday snowstorm that blanketed the area, disrupting travel and daily routines.

The school division announced that administrative offices will open at 10 a.m., with a decision on afternoon activities to be made by noon Tuesday. The decision to close schools comes amid growing frustration from some parents, who argue that frequent weather-related cancellations have disrupted the academic calendar.

“Ridiculous. Either we need to split the county into two school districts, or we have to stop raising and putting in charge snowflakes that can’t handle a little snow and cold weather,” one resident commented on social media. “The kids have basically been out for a month between these snow days, professional days, and holidays.”

Meanwhile, in Lenoir County, N.C., two high school seniors have been selected to represent North Carolina in the prestigious U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. Rachel Noble of South Lenoir High School was named a North Carolina Career and Technical Education (CTE) Presidential Scholar, while Lesley Wiggins of North Lenoir High School earned the title of North Carolina Academic Presidential Scholar.

Established in 1964, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program recognizes the nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors. This marks the first time in Lenoir County Public Schools history that two students have been selected in the same year.

“We are incredibly proud of Rachel and Lesley for this outstanding achievement,” said a spokesperson for Lenoir County Public Schools. “Their hard work and dedication have earned them this well-deserved recognition.”
