Magnitude 5.4 Earthquake Strikes Off Oregon Coast Early Wednesday
NEWPORT, Ore. — An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 was reported off the coast of Oregon, west of Newport, at approximately 6 a.m. Wednesday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
The earthquake struck at a depth of about 6.2 miles in an area known for its seismic activity. The Cascadia Subduction Zone, a 700-mile long fault line, runs off the Oregon coast and is a frequent site for earthquakes.
Scientists have warned of a significant chance that a much larger earthquake, potentially a magnitude 9 or greater, could occur on this fault line within the next 50 years. This underscores the region’s vulnerability to large seismic events.
Residents and authorities in Newport have been alerted to remain vigilant and prepared for potential aftershocks in the coming days.
