Mcpherson College Automotive Restoration Program

McPherson, Kansas — McPherson College will be highlighted in an episode of CBS Sunday Morning airing March 16, 2025, at 8 a.m. Central Time and noon on the CBS News app. The segment will showcase the college’s unique automotive restoration technology degree program.

Michael Schneider, president of McPherson College, expressed excitement about the upcoming feature, stating, “We are thrilled to be featured on this distinguished and beloved news program. It’s the perfect format to highlight a degree program that makes McPherson College unique and introduce this hidden gem of the Midwest to a wide audience.”

CBS Sunday Morning, an established television news magazine, has presented unique stories since its inception in 1979. For this episode, correspondent Lee Cowan followed McPherson College students to the Amelia Island Concours in February 2024 and visited the campus in March to cover the program’s advancements.

The automotive restoration program gained significant attention in August 2023 when a student-restored 1953 Mercedes-Benz 300 S Cabriolet secured second place in its class at the esteemed Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, marking the first occasion a student entry received a coveted award in the event’s history.

A documentary detailing the remarkable journey of the automotive restoration program to the Pebble Beach awards podium is now available for viewing on the college’s website. The documentary is narrated by legendary television host and car enthusiast Jay Leno, a long-time supporter of the program.

As the only college in the United States offering a bachelor’s degree in automotive restoration, McPherson College attracts support from prominent car collectors and figures within the classic car industry. With job placement rates nearing 100 percent, graduates from the program secure employment in various sectors, including Hagerty, Mercedes-Benz Classic Center, General Motors, RM Sotheby’s, the Henry Ford Museum, and various private collections.

Last year, McPherson College announced a transformative endowment, establishing one of the largest financial reserves among small liberal arts colleges in the U.S. This endowment supports significant campus development projects, including a new 55,000-square-foot Campus Commons, scheduled for completion in June 2025. Additionally, the college launched the Student Debt Project, which combines financial literacy education and mentorship with matching funds to help students manage and eliminate college debt by graduation.
